Festival of Fall Crochet Along… Week 9!!!

Festival of Fall Crochet Along… Week 9!!!

Yes… Festival of Fall Afghan CAL, Week 9… Now we are 90% complete! It is going so fast!! This week we complete the last square and joining the squares together to finish the base of the afghan!!!

This CAL is so easy… Same square each week… Just different color combinations! If you are just joining in, this week puts us at 15 of the 15 squares completed and we join!!!!!… You can make this any time at your leisure too!

All previous weeks can be found in the Crochet with Me tab at the top of the page along with all the other CAL’s I have designed.

Below is a picture of the up close join. I have used the Slip Stitch Zig Zag method.. But you can use any method you prefer… Below are directions for Slip Stitch Zig Zag Join, and a link to a great video by a fellow designer Bella Coco Crochet.

Yarn:

Red Heart ~ I recommend 5 colors, but minimum of 2 to show off the textural stitching. I used both With Love (370 yds ea) and Super Saver (364 Yds ea)colors to get the color scheme I wanted:

  • A~ With Love in Boysenberry (2 skeins)
  • B~ Super Saver in Gold (3 skeins)
  • C~ Super Saver in Dark Orchid (3 skeins)
  • D~ Super Saver in Carrot (2 skeins)
  • E~ With Love in Spinach (2 skeins)

Make 1 last square in this color scheme

  • Row 1 – E
  • Row 2 –A
  • Row 3 – B
  • Row 4 – C
  • Row 5 – D
  • Row 6 – E
  • Row 7 – A
  • Row 8 – B
  • Row 9 – C
  • Row 10 – D
  • Row 11 – E

Grab your yarn and hooks and get started on your blocks, since these squares were a previous pattern…  Click Here for the link to the pattern!

You will want to block your squares before joining if you haven’t already done this.

You will now want to also decide your layout… You can do the same as me(Graph Below) or make up your own layout. Each letter on the graph represents the starting color of each square.

Joining

Choose your joining color, I used my Gold which is Color B, I liked the contrast with the light color.

If you are going to do the Slip Stitch Zig Zag Join like I did, I found it easiest to leave them laid out on the floor and join.

Also, I recommend switching to a larger hook for the join, I used the J hook.

Starting with joining in the shorter width (3 squares across), All squares right side up, and beginning on the right hand side you will be working a slip stitch in the directed stitch of the bottom square then a sl st in the same corresponding st in the top square.

You will always do your sl sts entering the stitch from the right side(top of the blanket) See my photo tutorial below.

Here is a link to a great video of this Zig Zag Slip Stitch Join by Bella Coco Crochet. Click here!

Row 1. Sl St in the bottom square middle corner st, Sl St in the middle corner st of the top square, continue to sl st in the next st of the bottom square then the same corresponding st of the top square all the way across. You can make sure you match up at each corner junction and adjust if needed. Finish off at the end of the row

Row 2-4. Repeat row 1 joining the rows together

Now you will join the rows going lengthwise(5 squares across)

Row 5-7. Repeat row 1, working over the previous join in each corner junction into all the corners.

That’s it, you now have the base of the blanket done, Next week we will finish off with the border!

All weekly links will be updated in the Crochet with Me tab at the top of this page for future use.
