Simple Shells Slouchy Beanie is a stylish and easy to make hat using Lion Brand Yarn – Amazing Yarn. Using a self-striping yarn is one of my favorite quick project tips to use… The yarn does all the color work for you… Just sit back and crochet!!

Let’s get crocheting!!

Materials:  

Hook ~ H

Yarn ~ Approximately 200-225 yards Lion Brand Amazing Yarn (I used Joshua Tree)

Buy the yarn now:

 

2 Lovely Buttons

Scissors and Yarn Needle

Stitches:

st ~ stitch

sl st ~ slip stitch

ch ~ chain

sc ~ single crochet

dc ~ double crochet

dec ~ decrease

rev sc ~ reverse sc

4 dc shell ~ Make 4 dc’s in the designated stitch

3 dc shell ~ Make 3 dc’s in the designated stitch

Beg Shell ~ Ch 3, 3 dc(for 4 dc shell) or Ch 3, 2 dc(for 3 dc shell) in designated st.

Gauge:

2″ x 2″  = 7 dc x 4 rows


Instructions:

*This is an off-set shell pattern, each shell will be place slightly to the right of center in the previous shell

Band (Approx. 20″ long)

Ch 9

Row 1:  Sc in the second ch from hook and each across. = 8 sc

Row 2 – 60:  Ch 1, turn sc in the front loop of each st across. = 8 sc  Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing

Using the tail, sew the short ends together to form the band of the hat.

Hat

*To begin your hat, you will be working in the end of the rows of the top edge of your band.

Rnd 1:  Working in end of rows of Hat Band.  Join in any row end with sl st. Ch 1, sc 69 sts evenly around. Join with sl st to beginning. = 69 sc

Rnd 2: Beg 4 dc shell in the first st, *sk 2 sts, 4 dc shell in next st*, Repeat * * around, sk last 2 sts. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. = 23 shells

Rnds 3 -8:  Sl st in next st(2nd st of shell), beg 4 dc shell in same st, *sk 3 sts , 4 dc shell in next st*, Repeat * * around. Sk last 3 sts. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. = 23 shells

Rnd 9:  Sl st in next st, beg 3 dc shell in same st, *sk 3 sts, 3 dc shell in next st*, Repeat * * around, sk last 3 sts. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. = 23 shells.

Rnd 10:  Beg 3 dc shell in same st as you joined in, *sk 2, 3dc shell in next st*, Repeat * * around, sk last 2 sts. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. = 23 shells

Rnd 11:  Ch 3(counts as dc now and through out), dc in same st, * sk 2 sts, 2 dc in next st*, Repeat * * around, sk last 2 sts. Join to top of ch 3. =46 dc

Rnd 12:  Ch 3, dc in same st,  * sk next st, 2 dc in next st*, Repeat * * around, sk last st. Join with sl st to top of ch . =46 dc

Rnd 13:  Ch 3, *sk next st, dc in next st*, Repeat * * around, sk last st. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. = 23 dc

Rnd 14:  Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 23 sc

Rnd 15:   Ch 1, *sc in 3 sts, dec*, Repeat * * around. sc in last 3 sts. Join with sl st to beginning. =18 sc

Rnd 16:  Ch 1, dec around. Join with sl st to beg. = 9 sc.

Finish off leaving a long tail to close hat opening.

With Yarn needle, weave the tail through the 9 stitches of the opening and draw closed.  Secure on the inside of the hat and weave in ends.

Band Edging

Working in the end of rows of the band, join with sl st to any row.

Rnd 1:  Ch 1, sc 65 sts evenly around. Join with sl st to beginning sc.

Rnd 2:  Ch 1, rev sc around. Join to beginning. = 65 rev sc.

Finish off and weave in ends.

 

Sew your decorative buttons on the band.

  1. Hi Elena, I love shell stitches and this hat is adorable, but I have short hair and slouchies don’t look right on me. So to make this a shell slouchie into a reg beanie cap style, would I just follow the basic pattern but just make fewer rounds? I can follow a standard beanie crown for sizing but I just wanted to see if you think I’m going to go about this correctly… thx for the pattern!

      You work in reverse. So where you usually do a single crochet working from right to left… With a the rev sc you work from the left to the right. You can find videos on line if you need more direction.

    • This is also called the crab stitch. YouTube has great tutorials for it.
