2026 Mystery Winter Afghan CAL… Week 8

2026 Mystery Winter Afghan CAL… Week 8

2026 Mystery Winter Afghan CAL… Week 8! This is section 7 of the afghan and the last part of the main body. Yay! Just think… In 2 more weeks you will have a completed afghan… Seems like it went by so fast!

Week 8 CAL

Week 8 you will make 9 more squares as before and attach the last section of the Chevron Moss Stitch you made last week. Although we did both of these things previously… I have the instructions below. This completes the base of the project.. I love mine! Next week we will fill in the couple side gaps and ends and start the border!

For all the participants… I can’t wait to see your version and finished project!!!

How the CAL Works

This CAL will be a 10 week project including this week. Each week I will post a section for you to complete. If you start late or miss a week, you will find all of the posts in the Crochet with Me Tab at the top of the website… You can also find each weeks post/link by clicking here or in the Crochet with Me tab at the top of the page along with all past week links… So check it out!

Easy to join… All you need to do is come back here each Tuesday for the weekly post… If you would like to get each post in full by email, you can enter your email in the Stay Connected section in the right sidebar.

Another great way to join the fun is to hop over to Facebook and join my Beatrice Ryan Designs CAL group… This group is dedicated to my CAL’s only… We post pics, help each other, and each week I post the new links in the group… For this CAL, there will be weekly prizes exclusive to the group members(details below)

Let’s Get Started with Week 8… Squares First!

This Weeks Housekeeping

This week with an unblocked project my final base measured 43″ x 66″

This week we switch to Color B and you will be making 9 squares. I used a complimentary single color yarn for the squares from Michaels- Loops and Threads Impecable Yarn in Putty(see week 1 for total yardage for the project)

I recommend blocking your squares, either on a blocking board(see what I use below) or lightly steam block them

Each square is approx 3.75″ x 3.75″, closer to a 4″ square is ok – don’t go smaller! If yours is too small to up hook sizes until you get it right

After blocking, set them aside for a future week

Stitches Used This Week

  • Ch – Chain
  • St – Stitch
  • Sl St – Slip Stitch
  • Sk – Skip
  • Sp – Space
  • Sc – Single Crochet
  • Dc – Double Crochet
  • Fpdc – Front Post Double Crochet
  • FO – Finish Off

Let’s Crochet!

You will be using the Magic Circle technique to start each square.  If you need a tutorial Click Here for a great video tutorial from my friend Moogly!

*When working the Fpdc/Sc sequences, be very careful not to miss any stitches.  This can be tricky until you get the hang of it.

Round 1:  Ch 1, Sc 8 into the center of the magic circle. Join with Sl St and tighten your circle. = 8 Sc

Round 2:  Ch 3(counts as Dc now and through out), Dc in same St, Dc in next St, Ch 1, *2 Dc in next St, Dc in next St, Ch 1*. Repeat * * 2 more times.  Join with Sl St to beginning. =12 Dc, 4 Ch 1

Round 3 Ch 1, *Fpdc around next St(for the 1st fpdc, make it around the same as the joining st from round 1), Sc in the top of the same St, Fpdc around next St, Sc in next St, Fpdc around Same St as your Sc, Ch 1*, Repeat * * 3 more times. Join with Sl St to top of Fpdc. = 12 Fpdc, 8 Sc  and 4 Ch1

Round 4:  Ch 1, 2 Fpdc around the Same St, *Sc in next sc, 2 Fpdc  around next St, Sc in next sc, 2 Fpdc around next st, Ch 1, 2 Fpdc around the next st*, Repeat * to*3 more times ending with the ch 1, Join with Sl St to beginning.  = 24 Fpdc, 8 Sc and 4 Ch 1 Sp.

Round 5: Ch 1, *sc in 8 sts, (sc,ch1,sc)in ch 1 sp*, repeat *to* 3 more times, sl st to top of beginning sc to join. = 40 sts & 4 ch 1

FO and weave in tail – Make 9 total!

This week I did not pre block my squares before joining them… You will see in my picture there is a little difference between this weeks joined squares and the previous one. Also if you look carefully… The middle square is a different one… I was playing around with squares previously and decided just to use it…

Now let’s join them with the final Moss Stitch Chevron Section!

*When Joining your squares to the 2 chevron sections, you can join any way you like… I used a simple sewing method. (see pic below)

**Make sure you don’t join to tightly. This will slightly pucker as you can see in the photo below, but you will block it to make it nice!

ALSO… Make sure your squares are right side up like the other joining squares!!!

This is the sewing technique I used.

I sewed the squares Right Sides Up for both the squares and sections, starting with the bottom of the squares right to left, then the top of the squares right to left. The stitching was in the back loop of the corresponding square stitch then thru the back loop of the corresponding section stitch, next the back loop of the section corresponding stitch then thru the back loop of the corresponding square stitch and continued across . See the illustration above

Week 8 Completed !!! We will enclose the 4 triangle shaped gaps on the sides and start the border next week!
