Whimsical Autumn Afghan Mystery Crochet Along… Week 8!!

Whimsical Autumn Afghan Mystery Crochet Along… Week 8!!

Week 8 of our Whimsical Autumn Afghan Mystery CAL is now here… Thank you all for your patience in the delay of this CAL… See the story at the end of the post! But, for now.. Let’s get the show on the road and join our 35 squares.. And if you are just starting, you can find all of the weekly instructions in the Crochet with Me Tab at the top of the page!

The first 7 weeks we made 4 styles of squares, now it’s time to join… You will be using my picture as a guide to placement and the instructions for joining are just below!

This week is easy, but a bit time consuming… Here is how I did my joining:

1: I chose my lightest color to join, Color B which was my Golden color.

2: Lay out all of your squares in the order you see above. I made sure that when I was lining them up, the last round of sc color on each square didn’t sit next to the same color on the squares around it. This added a little more pizazz to the project! So, if your square had color A as the sc round, then the squares on the sides, above and below should have B, C or D as the colors of the last rounds… it was a little tricky to make it all work.. but mine did. If yours doesn’t, no problem.. it will look great as long as your square styles are the same as mine.

3: Starting on the Left column of 7 squares, you will be joining the short sides together first (see photo showing short rows below), Joining one side of each square together and lining up the stitches. Using my Golden yarn… I placed the first 2 squares right sides together. *You will be working in the back loops of all of the squares as you join. Join your yarn with a sl st in the BL corner stitches of both squares on the Righthand side, ch 1, sc in same bl sts(both squares.). Continue to bl sc together in both stitches of both squares across to the lefthand corner. Finish off. You will want to make sure your stitches line for both squares as you join.

4: Continue to join all 7 squares in the same manner, placing the next square and previous square right side together and sc in both across from righthand corner to lefthand corner of short rows.

5: Once each 7 square column is complete, set it aside and join the next column until you have all 5 columns competed.

6: Joining the columns- Using the same bl sc technique, place the first 2 columns right sides together and starting at the top of the columns, bl sc in both squares working all the way to the bottom. ** Make sure all of your corners line up as you pass them. Finish off.

7: Continue to join each column to the next working to the right until the entire blanket is joined

** If you prefer to use a whip stitch instead of the sc that will work perfectly too!

8: Block you blanket to get it into shape

That’s it… You now are done with Week 8!! Over the next 2 weeks, we will be making the edging!

Next Sunday I will be posting Week 9 and on the 24th I will post the final Post – Week 10. This will give you time to finish by Thanksgiving still hopefully! I will be moving the Grand-prize Amazon $50 giveaway date out to December 7th instead of November 30th so everyone has time to finish with the delay I had.

The story of the delay in the posts… On October 5th, my 88 year old mother was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer and was given a maximum of 6 months to live. She had just survived breast cancer (or we thought she had) but unfortunately it moved to her liver. Things were going along as expected, but the last week of October she rapidly started declining and passed away peacefully with her family surrounding her on October 31st. She will be missed by all and it is a big loss for our family and our community. She was a beautiful soul, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend to all who new her.. She was know for being a wonderful nurse, teacher and children’s advocate through out her career. She is now “home”.
