Springtime Tic Tac Toe… Free Crochet Pattern!


Springtime Tic Tac Toe… Free Crochet Pattern!!! This fun and whimsical pattern is a super fun twist on a traditional game! Chicks and Bunnies are used to play on this textural crocheted board. The pattern is easy to make and fun for all ages!

Front

The Springtime Tic Tac Toe board is made with single crochet and treble crochet to make the textured squares then topped off with surface stitching to form the grid! I loved using the Red Heart Super Saver Ombre for the color changing effect it had on the grid!

Springtime Tic Tac Toe Crochet Game

The Board and 5 Chick and 5 Bunnies make up the set!!


Crochet Supplies:

Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver

  • Mat you will need 250 yards of Ombre’ in Spearmint and White
  • Bunnies you will need 100 yards of White, Safety Eyes and Noses
  • Chicks you will need 100 yards of Bright Yellow, Safety Eyes and scraps of Orange Yarn
  • 10 Small Bean Bags 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″
  • Yarn Needle and Scissors

Hooks: D and H

Fronts and back prior to sewing together and stuffing with bean bags

Stitches:

  • St – Stich
  • Sp – Space
  • Ch – Chain
  • Dec – Decrease
  • Sl St – Slip Stitch
  • Sc – Single Crochet
  • Hdc – Half Double Crochet
  • Dc – Double Crochet
  • Trc – Treble Crochet
  • Fsc – Foundation Single Crochet

Size:

Mat – 15″ x 15″ Chick 3 1/2″ x 3″ Bunny 4″ x 3″


Instructions for the Springtime Tic Tac Toe:

Game Board/Mat-

Using your Spearmint Ombre Yarn and the H hook

*Odd rows are the right side, even rows are the wrong side

Row 1: 49 Fsc

Row 2: Ch 1 Turn, sc in 1st st, *sc in next st, trc in next st*, repeat *to* 6 more times, {sc in next 2 sts, repeat *to* 7 times}, repeat {to} one more time, sc in last 2 sts. = 28 sc & 21 trc *The trc are pushed to the back to create the texture

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. = 49 sc

Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st 3 sts, {*trc in next st, sc in next st*, repeat *to* 5 more times, sc in next 4 sts}, repeat {to} 2 more times ending with only sc in the last 2 sts. =18 trc & 21 sc

Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. = 49 sc

Rows 6-15: Repeat rows 2-5, ending with rows 2 & 3

Row 16-17: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.=49 sc

Rows 18-33: Repeat rows 2-17

Rows 34-47: Repeat rows 2-15

Border

Row 48: Continuing around with rightside facing, 2 more sc in same st(corner), evenly sc 47 sts across row ends, 3 sc in 1st st of row 1(corner), sc in next 47 sts, 3 sc in next last st of row 1(corner), evenly sc 47 sts across row ends, 2 sc in 1st st of row 1, sl st in same st(4th corner) = 200 sc all the way around

Row 49: Ch 1, turn, sc in sl st, *3 sc in next sst, sc in next 49 sts*, repeat *to* around ending with only 48 sc, join with sl st to beginning st. =208 sc

Row 50: Ch 1, turn, loosly sl st all the way around in each st making (sl st, ch 1, sl st) in each corner st. = 212 sl sts & 4 ch1

Using White Yarn and H hook

Middle Grid Lines– Top stitch approximately 50 sc sts across each of the 2 horizontal lines and the 2 vertical lines in the sc areas between textural squares, crossing over each other as seen in the picture below. You will join at the right side of each top stitch row and finish off at the left of each top stitch row

Outer top stitch border-

Join the white yarn in the top right corner base of the stitches of row 49, sc top stitch around working over the tops of the beginning and end of the grid top stitching ends you just made. See the picture above for reference. There will be approximately 50 sc top stitches on each side of the outer square when done.

Finish off and weave ends in. Block project to make square

Bunnies and Chicks

Make 5 bunnies and 5 chicks

Chicks: Make 10 pieces

With Bright Yellow Yarn and D hook

*All done with Right Side Facing

Row 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 6sc

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 12 sc

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc in next st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next st*, repeat *to* around, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 18 sc

Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc in next 2 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts*, repeat *to* around, join with sl st to beginning sc. =24 sc

Row 5: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc in next 3 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts*, repeat *to* around, join with sl st to beginning sc. =30 sc

Row 6: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, hdc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts*, repeat *to* around, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 32 sc, 2 hdc & 2 dc

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in next st(you will not work in the traditional 1st st), hdc in next st, dc in the next 2 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next 29 sts, join with sl st to the joining sl st of row 6. = 30 sl sts, 2 sc, 2 hdc & 2 dc

Finish off

Chick Faces: Place 2 black safety eyes on each of 5 right sides and make a french know for the beak using orange yarn. (you can also use a yarn needle to make eyes with black yarn if you want). See picture above for reference.

Joining backs and fronts: Using Bright Yellow Yarn and D hook, you will have one face and one back with wrong sides together and the face of the chick facing you. Sc the 2 pieces together going around in each st from the row 7 of each piece together. * add the small bean bag when you have a small section unworked then finish stitching together.

Bunnies: Make 10 pieces

With White Yarn and D hook

*All done with Right Side Facing

Row 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 6sc

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 12 sc

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc in next st, *2 sc in next st, sc in next st*, repeat *to* around, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 18 sc

Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc in next 2 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts*, repeat *to* around, join with sl st to beginning sc. =24 sc

Row 8-10: Ch 1, turn, sc in 4 sts = 4 sc

Row 11: Ch 1, turn, dec sc two times. = 2sc

Row 12: Ch 1, turn, dec sc. = 1 sc

Finish off

2nd Ear

With Right Side Facing, join yarn in the next st to the left of the 1st ear(this should be in a dc)

Repeat rows 7 – 12 and finish off

Bunny Faces: Place 2 safety eyes and 1 pink safety nose on each of 5 right sides. (you can also use a yarn needle to make eyes with black yarn and pink yarn to make the nose if you want). See picture above for reference.

Joining backs and fronts: Using White Yarn and D hook, you will have one face and one back with wrong sides together and the face of the Bunny facing you. Sc the 2 pieces together going around in each st and ear row ends from the row 6 for the face and 7-12 row ends of each piece together. * add the small bean bag when you have a small section unworked then finish stitching together.
