After making the Winter Walk Headband, I decided some of us might want a stylish hat in this same “easy to make and wear” design…  Using self-stripping yarn make these projects work up like a breeze and look so fashionable!  This Winter Walk Beanie is a great grab and go hat for those cold mornings that are headed our way and also a great gift idea!!

Materials:

Yarn ~ 200 yards of worsted weight yarn ~ I suggest using Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable!!  Photo is in color way Echo…

Hook ~H & I

Stitches:

St ~ Stitch     Sl St ~ Slip Stitch     Sk ~ Skip     Ch ~ Chain     Sc ~ Single Crochet     Hdc ~ Half Double Crochet     Dc ~ Double Crochet     Fpdc ~ Front Post Double Crochet     Bpdc ~ Back Post Double Crochet

Dec Hdc ~ Decrease Half Double Crochet… Click here for tutorial

*Tips ~

You will not turn while working the ribbing, all other rounds you will turn.

By joining around the ch 3 sts instead of in the top of the st for the ribbing, you will keep the first st of each ribbing round looking like a fpdc.

Size:

19″ around the ribbing~ This will stretch up to approx. 23″, The crown of the hat is slightly larger due to using a larger hook.

Instructions:

Using the H hook… Ch 66, When starting leave a long tail(3-4″) to join the bottom edge round.

*You will work the first Round across, then join.  This technique makes it easier not to get your project twisted. You just join the bottom together with the tail.

Round 1:  Dc in the 4th ch from hook and each ch across. = 64 dc Join carefully not to twist project

Round 2 -6:  Ch 3(Counts as dc now and throughout), *bpdc around next st, fpdc around next st*, repeat * to * around. Join with sl st around the top of the beginning ch 3. = 32 bpdc, 32 fpdc

Change to the I hook

Round 7:  Ch 1, (sc,dc) in the first st, sk st, *(sc,dc) in the next st, sk st*, repeat * to * around. Join with sl st around the beginning sc. = 32 (sc,dc)

Round:  8-24:  Ch 1, turn, (sc,dc) in 1st st, sk st, *(sc,dc) in next st(this should land in sc sts from previous round), sk st*, repeat * to * around. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 32 (sc,dc)

Round 25:  Ch 1, turn, (sc,dc) in 1st st, sk st, *(sc,dc) in next st, sk st*, repeat * to * 7 more times, sc in next st, {sk st, repeat *to* 9 times, sk st, sc in next st}, repeat {to} 1 more time, sk st, (sc,dc) in next st, sk st, (sc,dc) in next st, sk st. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 61 sts

Round 26: Ch 1, turn, (sc,dc) in 1st st, sk st, (sc,dc) in next st,*sk 1 st, (sc,dc) in next st*, {sk 1 st, repeat *to* 9 times} repeat {to} 1 more time, sk 2 sts,^(sc,dc) in next st, sk st^, repeat ^to^ 7 more times. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 58 sts    *tip- you are skipping 2 stitches 3 times, its easy to miss this between ** & {} sections

Round 27:  Ch 2(counts as hdc), turn, hdc in next 5 sts, dec hdc, * hdc in next 6 sts, dec hdc*, repeat *to* around. hdc in last st. Join with sl st to top of ch 2. = 50 sts

Round 28:  Ch 2, turn, hdc in next 2 sts, dec hdc, *hdc in next 3 sts, dec hdc*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of ch 2. = 40 sts

Round 29:  Ch 2, turn, hdc in next st, dec hdc, * hdc in next 2 sts, dec hdc*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of ch 2. =30 sts.

Finish off leaving a long tail.

To close the top of the hat, weave the long tail in and out of each of the 30 sts and draw closed. Secure yarn and weave in ends.

Using the long tail of beginning ch, sew the bottom edge of the headband together.

*To make this hat smaller or larger… it is in 2 st increments and increase or decrease rounds in between rounds 8 & 24*

Congratulations!!!  You now have a Winter Walk Beanie… You can experiment with different yarns to see what effects you get, but keep in mind that it may change the look and sizing of the project…

Happy Crocheting!!

  1. What size hook?

  2. I soooo want to make this!!!
Totally lost at row 25 and after, when you start different captions {} x amount of times?
    HELP

    • Beatrice Ryan Designs

Just take it step by step… basically you will do 9 (sc,dc), sk st segments, then you will sc only in the next st, you will do all of this 3 times total around, then sk a st, (sc,dc) in next st twice and sk the last st and join. Try to read through the pattern so you get use to multiple repeat marks after you get it… it just takes practice

  3. I had problems with rnd 29. To get to 20 sts on that rnd, I had to ch 2, hdc in next st, then hdc dec around. What is correct?

  4. I LOVE this hat pattern in the picture. I have been crocheting for over 20 years. I just got done making it for myself, followed the pattern to a T, and it came out HUGE!!! The brim part was ok but the rest was WAY too long and way too wide, it looked like I had a huge floppy chefs hat on.. SO I ripped it all out 🙁 DO you have any suggestions? I really really Love this pattern & would love to make it again and have it fit right.. It looks like its supposed to be just a little bit slouchy in the pattern but not real slouchy

  5. Good morning, on the first back post double crochet of each row should I be working around the chain 3? Or the next stitch?

    • Beatrice Ryan Designs

The next st… your ch 3 is a stitch… when you join at the end of the round… you join “around” the ch 3 to make it a post st…

  6. Hi. i used Landscapes yarn and an I and J hook to get size. I’m confused on round 7. It starts with a ch1 and at the end says to join to ch 3. So am I chaining 1 or 3? Thx

  7. Round 8. When I ch 1 and turn the first stitch is a dc. When I skip a stitch the next stitch is a dc. According to your pattern this hould be a sc I’m working in. ?????

    • Beatrice Ryan Designs

Right… I changed row 7 to read … Join with sl st around the beginning ch 3, sl st in next st.. This way you are starting in a sc.

  8. Love this pattern. I’ve made several hats and would really like to make a matching scarf. Do you have any suggestions for modifying the pattern?

    • Beatrice Ryan Designs

You would have to try to work it out from the hat… I may do a scarf to match in the near future though

  9. I love the look of this and just wanted to see if I can get some clarification before I start. Once you complete the brim and move to the body of the hat, the instructions say (sc,dc) in 1st st, sk st. Are you putting a SC and a DC in each stich?

  10. I love the WINTER WALK BEANIE but I need help with round 25 and 26. I am confused with the symbols {} and ^. Please advise. Thank you.
