So cute and sweet… The Twirly Whirly Baby Blanket is a fun and simple project with a unique, whimsical edging! Using the moss stitch and cluster stitch with a three color scheme, it makes a beautifully textured blanket… The fun twisted fringe is working using a super easy stitching technique!!!

This is the perfect textual baby blanket for any little angel… This is also a great baby shower gift… It can be made in any color scheme to match any decor… Using 3 colors sets off the fun moss stitch technique! Size:

48″ x 46″ including fringe

Materials:

Yarn ~ Red Heart Bunches of Hugs 3 colors, 948 yards each. Total for blanket needed in worsted weight yarn, Color A 600 yards, Color B & C 400 yards each.

Hook ~ I

Stitches:

Ch – Chain

St – Stitch

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Sk – Skip

Sp – Space

Sc – Single Crochet

Dc – Double Crochet

Cluster – Yo(Yarn Over), insert hook in st, draw up loop same height as dc, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook, *yo, insert hook in same st, draw up loop same height as dc, yo, draw through 2 loops*, repeat *to* 1 more time, yo, draw through 4 loops, ch 1.

*Odd rows are the right side, even rows are the wrong side

Instructions:

Color A

Ch 126

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each across. = 125 sc

Color B

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st,* ch 1, sk st, sc in next st*, repeat *to* across. = 63 sc & 62 ch 1

Color C

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st, sc in ch 1, *ch 1, sk st, sc in next ch 1 sp*, repeat *to* across to last ch 1 sp and sc, sc in ch 1, sc in last st. = 64 sc & 61 ch 1

Color A

Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st, *ch 1, sk st, sc in next ch 1 sp*, repeat *to* across ending in with ch 1, sk st, sc in the last st. = 63 sc & 62 ch 1

Color B

Row 5: Repeat row 3

Color C

Row 6: Repeat row 4

Rows 7-21 Repeat rows 3 & 4 alternating colors A, B & C

Color A

Row 22: Ch 4(Counts as dc +ch 1), turn, sk st, *cluster in next st, ch 1, sk st*, repeat *to* across, dc in last st. = 61 clusters, 2 dc & 62 ch 1

Row 23: Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st, sc in ch 1, *ch 1, sk cluster, sc in next ch 1 sp*, repeat *to* across, sc in last st(3rd ch of ch 4). = 64 sc & 61 ch 1

Rows 24-29: Repeat rows 22 & 23

Color B

Row 30-49: Alternating colors A, B & C starting with color B, Repeat rows 3 & 4 starting with Row 4.

Color B

Rows 50-57: Repeat rows 22 & 23

Color C

Rows 58-77: Alternating colors A, B & C starting with color C, Repeat rows 3 & 4 starting with row 4.

Color C

Rows 78-85: Repeat rows 22 & 23

Rows 86–105: Alternating colors A, B & C starting with color A, repeat rows 3 & 4 starting with row 4.

Finish off

Edging:

With right side facing, join color A to the bottom righthand corner in the beginning stitch(your tail from the beginning of the project will be at the bottom left), working up the side of rows.

Round 1:  Ch 1, 3 sc in 1st ch st(corner), working up the side- sc 113 sc evenly up the side of rows, 3 sc in 1st st of row 105, sc in next 123 sts, 3 sc in last st of row 105, sc 113 sts evenly down the side of rows, 3 sc in 1st st of beginning ch(where the tail is), leave the 123 stitches of the bottom unworked(these will count as the 4th side of round 1. = 484 sc

Round 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in st, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 115 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 125 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 115 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 124 sts, join with sl st to the beginning sc. =492 sc

Round 3: ch4(counts as dc + ch 1), turn, *sk st, dc in next st, ch 1*, repeat *to* 61 more times, sk st, (dc,ch1,dc) in next st, ch 1, repeat *to* 58 times, sk st, (dc,ch1,dc) in next st, ch 1, repeat *to* 63 times, sk st, (dc,ch1,dc) in next st, ch 1, repeat *to* 58 times, sk st, (dc,ch1,dc) in next st, ch 1 sk st, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. =25o dc & 250 ch 1

Round 4: Ch 4, turn, sk st, dc in next dc, ch 1, (dc,ch1,dc) in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, ch 1, *dc in next st, ch 1, sk st*, repeat *to* 58 more times, dc in next dc, ch 1, (dc,ch1,dc) in next ch 1, ch 1, repeat *to* 64 times, dc in next dc, ch 1, (dc,ch1,dc) in next ch 1, ch 1, repeat *to* 59 times, dc in next dc, ch 1, (dc,ch1,dc) in next ch 1, ch 1, repeat *to* 63 times, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. = 258 dc & 258 ch 1

Fringe Border:

*This is an easy process, just time consuming. Please see the photo tutorial below to guide you

*Pull up loop 4″ long, wind loop 15 times in a clockwise rotation, sl st in same st, sl st in next st*, repeat * to * all the way around the blanket. You will need to slightly smooth, pull and slightly twist counter clockwise each fringe to get a nice even twisted fringe st. = 516 Twisted fringe sts

To make a longer fringe, you will pull a longer loop up and twist a few more times. If you over wind it doesn’t look as nice, so you can play with the length of the loop and number of twists…
