Basic crochet stitches, yarn, hook and the easy to read pattern is all you need to whip this up in just a couple of hours!

Supplies

Yarn Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton in Parchment $4.49 online(30% off every other week) and free shipping with a $60 order. Also, this is 180 yards per skein and you will use most of it for each place mat. Buy 180 yards for each placemat you would like to make!

Hook – H or hook to meet gauge. I to shop in store, but don’t have any in my town…. Amazon is a great source for hooks.

Stitches US Terms

  • Ch – Chain
  • St – Stitch
  • Sp – Space
  • Sk – Skip
  • Sl St – Slip Stitch
  • Sc – Single Crochet
  • Dc – Double Crochet
  • Rev Sc – Reverse Single Crochet

Gauge

Because yarn, hooks and personal tension can change the sizing of any crochet project, if you want your Simple Crochet Placemat to be as close to the size listed in this pattern… Please make a gauge swatch!

Single Crochet – 4″ x 4″ Swatch = 12 sts x 14 rows after blocking

Placemat Size

14″ x 18″

Instructions

Ch 36

Row 1: Dc in the 4th ch from hook and each across. = 34 dc

Row 2: Ch 5(counts as dc + ch2), turn, sk 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 2, sk 2 sts, dc in next 4 sts, *ch 2, sk 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 2, sk 2 sts, dc in next 4 sts*, repeat *to* one more time, ch 2, sk 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 2, sk 2 sts, dc in last st. = 18 dc & 8 ch2 sp

Row 3: Ch 3(counts as dc now and throughout), turn, dc in each st & ch across. = 34 dc

Rows 4 & 5: Repeat rows 2 & 3

Rows 6-33: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. = 34 sc

Edging

Round 1: Ch 1, turn, 3 sc in 1st st(corner), sc in next 32 sts, 3 sc in next st(corner), sc 52 sts evenly down row sides to the 1st st of row 1, 3 sc in 1st st of row 1(corner), sc in next 32 sts, 3 sc in next st(corner), sc 52 sts evenly up row sides, join with sl st to 1st st. = 180 sc

Rounds 2 & 3: Ch 1, turn sc in each st around, 3 sc in each of the 4 middle corner sts. Join with sl st to 1st st. = 188 sc & 196 sc

Round 42: Ch 1, rev sc in each st around, join with sl st to beginning and finish off.

Next, to make this Simple Crochet Placemat look amazing, please block it into shape. I get my piece wet with hot water, and roll it in a towel to remove most of the water. Next I pin it on my blocking mat, if you don’t have one you can just lay it flat and slightly stretch it in to shape… let dry completely.

This fun, seasonal placemat is similar to the Tea Time Placemat…  Easy stitching and added  embellishments make this a perfect project for a Forth of July or Patriotic  Barbecue!!  Whip a set of 4 Patriotic Summertime Placemats up in no time for a great gift set too!


Materials:

Worsted weight yarn ~ 200 yards main color & 25 yards of accent color per placemat.  Red Heart with Love was used in this pattern.

Color A ~ Red(Berry Red)

Color B ~ White(Eggshell)

Color C ~ Blue(Peacock)

Hook ~ I

Yarn Needle

 

Size:

Approximately 19″ x 15″

Stitches:

Sk ~ Skip      St ~ Stitch     Sl St ~ Slip Stitch     Ch ~ Chain     Sc ~ Single Crochet     Dc ~ Double Crochet

Ch1 Twist Stitch: Ch 1, turn project completely around one time to twist st and continue with pattern

Instructions:

With Color A~

Ch 45

Row 1:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each across. = 44 sts

Row 2:  Ch 1, turn, sk 1st st, (sc, dc) in next st, * sk st, (sc, dc) in next st*, repeat * * across. =44 sts

Row 3:  Ch 1, turn, (sc,dc) in each sc across, skipping all the dc’s. =44 sts

Rows 4-29:  Repeat Row 3

Row 30:  Ch 1, turn, sc across. = 44 sts

Edging:

Round 1:  2 sc in same st as last st of row 30(1st corner), sc 29 sts evenly down the side of the rows, 2 sc in same st as 1st st of  beginning of placemat row 1(2nd corner), join with sl st to the 1st st of row 1. Finish off.

Round 2:  Join with sl st in the same space as the last st of row 1(44th st), 2 sc in same st(3rd corner), sc 29 sts evenly up the side of rows, 2 sc in same space as the  1st st of row 30, join with sl st to 1st st of top of placemat(4th corner).=154 sts

Round 3:  Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st, 3 sc in next st(1st corner), sc in next 31 sts, 3 sc in next st(2nd corner), sc in next 22 sts, 2 sc in next st(increase is needed to end with odd number of sts), sc in next 21 sts, 3 sc in next st(3rd corner) sc in next 31 sts, 3 sc in next st(4th corner), sc in next 21, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 21 sts, join to beginning sc. =164 sts

Change to Color B

Round 4:  Join yarn in top right corner st(middle of 3), ch 1, {(sc, dc, ch1, dc, sc) in same st as joining, sc in next st, *(sc,dc,ch1,dc,sc) in next st, sk st, sc in next st, sk st*, repeat * * 10 more times,(sc,dc,ch1, dc, sc) in next st, sc in next st, (sc,dc, ch1, dc, sc) in next st(2nd corner), sc in next st, ^sk st, (sc, dc, ch1, dc, sc), sk st, sc in next st^,repeat ^ ^ 7 more times, }, repeat { } starting in the 3rd corner. Join to beginning sc. Fasten off.= 44 (sc, dc, ch1, dc, sc)

Change to Color C

Round 5:  Join yarn in any ch1 sp of a corner, ch 1, 3 sc in ch1 sp, *sc in next 2 sts, sk st, sc in next 2 sts, 3 sc in next ch1 sp*, repeat * * around to last 5 sts, sc in next 2 sts, sk st, sc in last 2 sts, Join to beginning sc. Finish off.

Change to Color A

Round 6: Join yarn in middle st of any corner, ch 1, *3 sc in st, sc in next 2 sts, sk 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts*, repeat * * around, join to beginning st. Finish off.

Weave in all ends.

Star ~ 

Make 3

Make magic circle

Round 1:  Ch 1, 9 sc in circle, join to beginning sc. = 9 sc

Round 2:  Ch 1, *(sc, dc, ch1 twist st, dc, sc) in st, sk st*, repeat * * 5 times, join to beginning, finish off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew stars in place.

Congratulations, you now have a Patriotic Summertime Placemat!!!
