Summer Stripe Tote Bag

Cheery, whimsical and easy to make!!  The Summer Stripe Tote Bag is the perfect bag to take to the market, beach or as your summer everyday bag! Using self-striping yarn, makes the work is easy… Simple moss stitch and fun join make the bit of whimsy on the front of the bag… Your choice of handles, either a simple crochet handle or a fun ready-made handle can make this personalized to your taste!

Materials: 

Yarn~ 1 Caron Cakes worsted weight yarn, 383 yards per skein. I used Spice Cake and Blueberry Kiwi.

Hook~ H   *You can use a larger or smaller hook to make the bag bigger or smaller

Instructions:

Ch 52

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch*, repeat *to* across. = 26 sc & 25 ch1 sps

Row 2:  Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st, *sc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, sk st*, repeat *to* across, sc in last ch 1 sp and last st. = 27 sc & 24 ch1 sp

Row 3:  Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st st, *ch 1, sk st, sc in next st*, repeat *to* across`. = 26 sc & 25 ch1 sps

Rows 4-99:  Repeat rows 2 & 3

Joining Row 1 to Row 99:

You will be working 1 st in row 99 then 1 st in row 1, this will join the two ends together.

Ch2 (counts as hdc), hdc in 1st st of row 1, *ch 1 sk ch 1 sp of row 99, hdc in next st of row 99, ch 1, sk next ch 1 sp of row 1, hdc in next st of row 1*, repeat * to * across. = 52 hdc & 51 ch 1 sts

Top Edging:

Join yarn with sl st to top of the bag(either end can be the top)

*No turning rows 1-3, turn rows 4 & 5

Row 1:  Ch 1, sc 96 sts evenly around the top of the bag, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 96 sc

Row 2:  Ch 3(counts as dc), X st, * dc in next st, X st*, repeat *to* around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 32 x sts & 32 dc.

Row 3:  Ch 1, sc in each st across. = 96 sc

Row 4:  Ch 1, turn, sc in each st around, join with sl st to 1 sc. = 96 sc

Row 5:  Ch 1, rev sc around, join with sl st to beginning st, finish off. = 96 rev sc

*Lining up the fancy join placement to the right 1/3 of the bag( See my bag at top for placement), sew bottom of bag closed.

Straps: 

2 options – 

Option 1: Crochet Handles

Ch 81(leave a tail for sewing handle to bag)

Row 1:  Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and each across. = 80 sl st

Row 2:  Ch 1, turn, sl st in each st across. = 80 sl st

Row 3:  Ch 3, turn, dc in each st across. = 80 dc

Row 4 – 5:  Ch 1, turn, sl st in each st across. = 80 sl st

Finish off, leave tail for sewing  handle to bag

Sew 1st handle to front inside and 2nd handle to back inside.

Option 2:  Purchased Handles

Sew handles on inside of the bag to the front and back.

Congratulations!!

You now have a Summer Stripe Tote Bag!!

Coral and Stone Square

The Coral and Stone Square is a fun and whimsical project that can be used to make fun afghans, pillows or a creative tote bag!!!  The pattern is easy and quick using several textual crochet stitches… Best of all it is another free crochet pattern!

I loved designing  this lovely square and can’t wait to whip up several to join into a bright and fun afghan!!  Each square measures 12″ x 12″, but you can adjust the size by stopping at any point to make it smaller or adding additional double crochet and single crochet rounds to make it larger!

Materials:

Yarn – 50 yards each worsted weight yarn.  You can use 1-16 colors to make this your own.  I used the following:

Red Heart  with Love – Papaya(Color A), White(Color B) and Pewter(Color C)

 

Hook – Size J, I love the Clover Soft Touch Hooks!!

The only other item you will need is a pair of scissors…


Stitches:

St – Stitch

Ch – Chain

Sk – Skip

Sp – Space

Sl St – Slip Stitch

Sc – Single Crochet

Dc – Double Crochet

Trc – Treble Crochet

Special Stitch: Dc X St- Skip next st, dc in next st, dc back in previous sk st to form X st.

Instructions: 

Start with a Magic Circle and Color A… Click Here for a video tutorial from my good friend at Moogly!

Row 1:  Ch 1, 8 sc in center of magic circle, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 8 sc

Row 2:  Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same st, *ch 1, sk st, (sc,ch 2,sc) in next st*, repeat *to* 2 more times, ch 1, sk st, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 4 ch1, 4 (sc,ch 2,sc) Finish off

Join Color B in any ch2 sp

Row 3:  Ch 3(Counts as dc now and throughout), 4 dc in same sp, *ch 1, 5 dc in next ch 2 sp*, Repeat *to* 2 more times, ch 1, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 20 dc, 4 ch1  Finish off

Join Color C  in any ch1 sp

Row 4:  Ch 1, sc in same st, *sc in next 2 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, sc in next ch1 sp*, repeat *to* 2 more times, sc in next 2 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 32 sc Do not finish off.

Row 5:  Ch 1, sc in same st, trc in next st(push st to the front to create a bobble), sc in next st, trc in next st, {3 sc in next st, *trc in next st, sc in next st*, repeat *to* 2 more times, trc in next st}, repeat {to} 2 more times, 3 sc in next st, trc in next st, sc in next st, trc in next st, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 16 trc, 24 sc  Finish off

Join Color A in any middle st of a corner

Row 6:  Ch 3, 2 more dc in same st, *(dc X st over next 2 sts) 2 times, dc in next st, (dc X st over next 2 sts) 2 times, 3 dc in next st*, repeat *to* 2 more times, (dc X st over next 2 sts) 2 times, dc in next st, (dc X st over next 2 sts) 2 times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 16 dc X sts, 16 dc Finish off

Join Color B in any middle st of a corner

Row 7:  Ch 1, 3 sc in same st, {*trc in next st, sc in next st*, repeat *to* 4 more times, trc in next st, 3 sc in next st}, repeat {to} 2 more times, repeat *to* 5 times, trc in last st, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 24 trc, 32 sc  Finish off

Join Color C in any middle st of a corner

Row 8:  Ch 3, 2 more dc in same st, *(dc X st over next 2 sts) 3 times, dc in next st, (dc X st over next 2 sts) 3 times, 3 dc in next st*, repeat *to* 2 more times, (dc X st over next 2 sts) 3 times, dc in next st, (dc X st over next 2 sts) 3 times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 24 dc X sts, 16 dc  Finish off

Join Color A in any middle st of a corner

Row 9:  Ch 1, 3 sc in same st, {*trc in next st, sc in next st*, repeat *to* 6 more times, trc in next st, 3 sc in next st}, repeat {to} 2 more times, repeat *to* 7 times, trc in last st, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 32 trc, 40 sc  Finish off

Join Color B in any middle st of a corner

Row 10:  Ch 1, 3 sc in same st, *sc in next 17 sts, 3 sc in next st*, repeat *to* 2 more times, sc in last 17 sts, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 80 sc  Do not finish off

Row 11:  Ch 3, *3 dc in next st, dc in next 19 sts*, repeat *to* 2 more times, 3 dc in next st, dc in last 18 sts, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 88 dc

Row 12:  Ch 1, sc in next 2 sts, * 3 sc in next st, sc in next 21 sts*, repeat *to* 2 more times, 3 sc in next st, sc in last 19 sts, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 96 sc  Finish off

Join Color C in any middle st of a corner

Row 13:  Ch 1, 3 sc in same st, {*trc in next st, sc in next st*, repeat *to* 10 more times, trc in next st, 3 sc in next st}, repeat {to} 2 more times, repeat *to* 11 times, trc in last st, join with sl st to beginning sc. =48 trc, 56 sc Finish off

Join Color A in any middle st of a corner

Row 14:  Ch 1, 3 sc in same st, *sc in next 25 sts, 3 sc in next st*, repeat *to* 2 more times, sc in last 25 sts, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 112 sc Do not finish off

Row 15:  Ch 3, * 3 dc in next st, dc in next 27 sts*, repeat *to* 2 more times, 3 dc in next st, dc in last 26 sts, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 120 dc  Do not finish off

Row 16:  Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st, *3 sc in next st, sc in next 29 sts*, repeat *to* 2 more times, 3 sc in next st, sc in last 27 sts, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 128 sc  Finish off

Block your square using either the wet or steam method.

Congratulations!!  You now have a Coral and Stone Square!
