Yarn needle and Scissors

Size:

12″ x 12″ Square

Stitches:

  • St – Stitch
  • Ch – Chain
  • Sl St – Slip Stitch
  • Sc – Single Crochet
  • Hdc – Half Double Crochet
  • Dc – Double Crochet
  • Treble Crochet
  • Bl – Back Loop

Instructions:

Small Squares

Center of each small square. Make 3 in each color of A, B and C of rounds 1&2 for a total of 9

Begin with Color A, B or C and make a Magic Circle… Click Here for a great video tutorial by Moogly!

Round 1: Ch 1, 8 sc in center of magic circle, join with sl st to beginning sc. Pull center closed and secure. = 8 sc

Round 2: Ch 1, (sc, trc) in each st around. Push the trc bobble to the front which will be your right side, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 8 sc & 8 trc.

Finish off

Color D – Join with sl st to any st.

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in 1st st, sc in next 2 sts, 3 sc in next st, *sc in next 3 sts, 3 sc in next st*, repeat *to* 2 more times, 3 sc in last st. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 24 sc

Finish Off

Joining the small squares

Your choice of color arrangement.. I tried to mix it up so the same colors were not next to each other.

You will be single crocheting these together. If you choose to whip stitch them, the project may be a bit smaller, but you can add extra rounds of sc at the end to make it 12″

1: Join squares 1 & 2, right sides facing each other and working in the back loops of each stitch for each square – Join with sl st in the corner st of both squares, ch 1, sc in the same sts, blsc in the next 7 sts of each square across, blsc in the last corner sts. finish off

2: Join the 2nd & 3rd square together in the same manor.

3: Repeat rows 1 & 2 for squares 4, 5 & 6 and 7, 8 and 9 to make 3 strips of 3.

4: Join strips 1 & 2- with right sides together, sl st in bls of both righthand corners of strip 1 & 2, blsc in same st, bl sc in next 7 sts of both strips, sc in each side of the join(see pic below), blsc in next 7 sts of both strips, blsc in last corner sts. finish off. = 27 sts

5: Join strips 2 & 3 in the same manor. Finish off

The square is approx 8″ x 8″ at this point.

Enclosing the squares

Working with the right side up, you will be working in the round.

Join Color D in any corner bl

Round 1: Ch 1, 3 blsc in st, {*blsc in next 7 sts, 1 sc on each side of a join(2 total sc)*, repeat *to* 1 more time, blsc in next 7 sts, 3 blsc in next st}, repeat {to} 3 more times, ending at the sc before the 1st corner, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 112 sc, finish off.

Join Color A with sl st in any corner st

Round 2: Ch 1, {3 sc in corner sts, sk 1 st, *5 dc in next st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st, sk 2 sts*, repeat *to* 3 more ties, 5 dc in next st, sk 1 st}, repeat {to} 3 more times, join with sl st to the beginning sc. = 20 5dc shells and 28 sc. Finish off

Round 3: Ch 3(counts as dc), 6 dc in same st, {sk 3 sts, sc in next st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st*, repeat *to* 3 more times, sk 3 sts^, 7 dc in next st}, repeat {to} 3 more times ending at the sk 3 sts^. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 16 5dc shells, 4 7dc shells and 20 sc. Finish off

Join Color C with sl st in any middle st of a corner

Round 4: Ch 1, {3 sc in st, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next st, *sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next st*, repeat *to* 3 more times, sc in next 3 sts}, repeat {to} 3 more times, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 116 sc & 20 hdc. Finish off

Fringe Border:

*This is an easy process, just time consuming. Please see the photo tutorial below to guide you

*Pull up loop 4″ long, wind loop 15 times in a clockwise rotation, sl st in same st, sl st in next st*, repeat * to * all the way around the blanket. You will need to slightly smooth, pull and slightly twist counter clockwise each fringe to get a nice even twisted fringe st. = 516 Twisted fringe sts

To make a longer fringe, you will pull a longer loop up and twist a few more times. If you over wind it doesn’t look as nice, so you can play with the length of the loop and number of twists…

Congratulations, you now have a Twirly Whirly Baby Blanket… I hope you enjoy this fun and whimsical project… I fell in love with this fringe border once I got the hang of it and I think you will too!
