Are you ready for another fun, easy crochet square pattern ?? Here you go!!!  This is a 12″ square using worsted weight yarn. It can easily be made in one sitting!!

Using this 12″ Square you can make many sizes of beautiful afghans by making several blocks and crocheting them together, Or…  This Ziggidy Zag Summer Square along with my Rainbow Burst Reversible Square and my Festival of Fall Square are all made to work together to make a fun sampler afghan if you want to spice it up!


Materials:

Worsted weight yarn – 2 to 9 colors. 50 – 75 yards total.  I used Vanna’s Choice Yarn

Colors in order

A: Kelly Green    B: Mustard   C: Cranberry   D: Fern   E: Terra Cotta   F: Aqua

 

Hook- Size J

Stitches:

St – Stitch     Sp – Space     Ch – Chain    Sl St – Slip Stitch     Sc – Single Crochet     Dc – Double Crochet     Trc – Treble Crochet     Dec – Decrease (insert hook in st, yo and pull up loop, insert hook in next st, yo and pull up loop, yo, pull yarn thru all 3 loops on hook)

Special Stitches:  

V Stitch – 2 dc in one stitch

Puff Stitch ~ Yo, insert hook in sp, pull up loop, yo, insert hook in same sp, pull up loop, yo, draw yarn through all 5 loops on hook.

Decorative Stitch (sc,trc,sc) in one st. When making this st, make sure to pop the trc to the front of the square. This will make a nice decorative stitch.

Size:

12″ x 12″

Instructions:

Using Color A

Begin with a Magic Circle(video tutorial by Moogly)

Round 1:  Ch 1, *puff st, ch 1*, repeat * * 8 times. Join with sl st to beginning puff st. Finish off. = 8 puff sts & 8 ch1 sps

Color B

Round 2:  Join yarn with sl st in any ch1 sp, ch 3(counts as dc), (dc, ch-1, 2 dc) in same sp, *(2dc, ch-1, 2dc) in next ch-1 sp*, Repeat * to* around. Join with sl st to beginning of ch-3. Finish off. = 32 dc & 8 ch-1 sps

Color C

Round  3:  Join yarn in any ch-1 sp, ch 4(counts as trc), 8 trc in same sp, *(dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, 9 trc in next ch-1 sp*, repeat *to * 2 more times, (dc, ch 1 dc)  in last ch1 sp. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Finish off. =36 trc and 4-(dc,ch-1,dc)

Color D

Round 4:  Join with sl st in the 5th st of any corner (middle st of corner ) from row 3, ch 4, 6 more trc in same st, *sk st, V st in next st*, repeat *to* one more time, sk st, V st in ch 1 sp, repeat *to* 2 times, sk st, {7 trc in next st, repeat *to* 2 times, sk st, V st in ch 1 sp, repeat *to* 2 times,  sk st}, repeat {to} 2 more times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 4. = 4- 7 trc and 20 V sts

Color E

Round 5:  Join with sl st in 4th st of any corner (middle of corner st) from previous round, ch 3, 6 more dc in same st, * sk 2 sts, V st in next st, V st in center of next 5 V sts, sk st, V st in next st, sk 2 sts*, {7 dc in next st, repeat *to* one time}, Repeat {to} 2 more times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 28 V sts and 4- 7 dc

Color F

Round 6:   Join with sl st in 4th st of any corner (middle st of corner ) from previous round, ch 3, 6 more dc in same st, * sk 2 sts, V st in next st, V st in center of next 7 V sts, sk st, V st in next st, sk 2 sts*, {7 dc in next st, repeat *to* one time}, Repeat {to} 2 more times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 36 V sts and 4 – 7 dc

Color A

Round 7:   Join with sl st in 4th st of any corner (middle st of corner ) from previous round, ch 3, 6 more dc in same st, * sk 2 sts, V st in next st, V st in center of next 9 V sts, sk st, V st in next st, sk 2 sts*, {7 dc in next st, repeat *to* one time}, Repeat {to} 2 more times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 44 V sts and 4 – 7 dc

Color B

Round 8:   Join with sl st in 4th st of any corner (middle st of corner ) from previous round, ch 3, 6 more dc in same st, * sk 2 sts, V st in next st, V st in center of next 11 V sts, sk st, V st in next st, sk 2 sts*, {7 dc in next st, repeat *to* one time}, Repeat {to} 2 more times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 52 V sts and 4 – 7 dc

Color C

Round 9:  Join with sl st to 4th st of any corner(middle st of corner) from previous round, ch 1, 3 sc in same st, *sc in next 3 sts, (sc,trc,sc) in the center of each of the next 13 V sts, sk st, sc in next 3 sts, 3 sc in next st*, Repeat *to* 2 more times, sc in the next 3 sts, (sc,trc,sc) in the center of each of the next 13 V sts, sc in the last 3 sts, join with sl st to the beginning sc. = 52 (sc,trc,sc) and 36 sc  *you will continue to use Color C*

Round 10:  Ch 1, sc in same st, {3sc in next st, sc in the next 4 sts, *dec over next 2 sts, sc in next st*, repeat *to* 12 more times, sc in next 4 sts}, Repeat {to} 2 more times, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, repeat *to* 13 times, sc in last 3 sts, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 148 sts

Weave in ends

That’s it… You now have a Ziggidy Zag Summer Square!!!

Week 3 of our Crochet Along is simple and fun!!

This week we are using the traditional Granny Square Stitch with a slight twist to the pattern…  We will be continuing to turn the circle, that became a square, then started to take shape as a rectangle… Become more rectangular!!!  I hope you have had fun to this point!!  If you are just joining in… This afghan pattern is so simple you will be able to catch up in no time!!

With the wrong side facing, join Color E to any corner ch1 sp.

27.  Ch 3, (2dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the same sp, {sk st, 3 dc in next st, *sk 2 sts, 3 dc in next st*, repeat *to* 23 more times, sk last st, (3dc, ch1, 3 dc ) in next ch 1 sp}, repeat {to} 2 more times, sk st, 3 dc in next st, repeat *to* 24 times. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. =108 3dc shells

Turn, join Color F to the top Right corner ch1 sp above dc section of round 26.This will be adding height to your rectangle.

28.  Ch4, 2 trc in same sp, * sk 3 sts, 3 trc in the sp (between next two groupings of 3dc shells)*, repeat *to* 25 more times, (3trc, ch1, 3 dc) in next ch 1 sp, ^sk 3 sts, 3dc in next sp^, repeat ^to^ 25 more times, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 trc) in next ch 1 sp, rep *to* 26 times, (3 trc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch 1 sp, repeat ^to^ 26 times, 3 dc in last ch 1 sp, ch 1. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 4. =56 3trc shell & 56 3dc shells

Turn, join Color A to any corner

29.  Ch 3, (2dc, ch1, 3dc) in same sp, *sk 3 sts, 3 dc in next sp*, repeat *to* 26 more times, {(3dc, ch 1, 3dc) in next ch 1 sp, *sk 3 sts, 3 dc in next sp*, repeat *to* 26 more times}, repeat {to} 2 more times, Join to top of beginning ch 3. =116 3dc shells

Turn, Join Color B in top right corner ch 1 sp above the 3trc shell section of round 28.

30.  Ch 4, 2 trc in same sp, *sk 3 sts, 3trc in next sp*, repeat *to* 27 more times, (3trc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch 1 sp, ^sk 3 sts, 3 dc in next sp^, repeat ^to^ 27 more times, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 trc) in next ch 1 sp, repeat *to* 28 times, (3trc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch 1 sp, repeat ^to^ 28  times, 3 dc in last ch 1 sp, ch 1. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 4. = 60 3trc shells & 60 3dc shells.

Turn, join Color C in any corner

31.  Ch 3, (2dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same sp, *sk 3 sts, 3dc in next sp*, repeat *to* 28 more times, {(3dc, ch 1, 3dc) in next ch 1 sp, repeat *to* 29 times,}, repeat {to} 2 more times. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 124 3dc shells

Turn, join Color D to top right corner ch 1 sp above 3trc shells.

32.  Ch 4, 2 trc in same sp*sk 3 sts, 3trc in next sp*, repeat *to* 29 more times, (3trc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch 1 sp, ^sk 3 sts, 3 dc in next sp^, repeat ^to^ 29 more times, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 trc) in next ch 1 sp, repeat *to* 30 times, (3trc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch 1 sp, repeat ^to^ 30  times, 3 dc in last ch 1 sp, ch 1. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 4. = 64 3trc shells & 64 3dc shells.

That’s it… Yay, you have completed week 3!!!  Weave in your ends and you will be ready for week 4!

**In the last stages of the CAL, for those of you who don’t like the openness of the center, I will provide a fun option to make it solid!!!**

This fun to make square can be made using 2 or more colors and is perfect for stash busting!! Included in this Free Crochet Pattern are directions for this colorful square to be made into an 8″, 10″ or 12″ square.

Materials ~

Yarn:  Approx 100-175 yards total Worsted Weight Yarn ~ Pictured above is Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice Yarn in Aqua,Eggplant, Mustard, Magenta and Kelly Green

Hook: H

Stitches ~ 

St – Stitch     Sk – Skip     Sl St – Slip Stitch     Ch – Chain     Sc – Single Crochet     Dc – Double Crochet     Fpdc – Front Post Double Crochet

Tips ~

You will be changing colors every row after row 2.

You will be using the Magic Circle technique to start each square.  If you need a tutorial Click Here for a great video tutorial from my friend Moogly!

When working the Fpdc, Sc sequences, be very careful not to miss any stitches.  This can be tricky until you get the hang of it.

Instructions ~

Begin with a Magic Circle.

Row 1:  Ch 1, Sc 8 into the center of the circle. Join with Sl St and tighten your circle. = 8 Sc

Row 2:  Ch 3(counts as Dc now and through out), Dc in same St, Dc in next St, Ch 1, *2 Dc in next St, Dc in next St, Ch 1*. Repeat * * 2 more times.  Join with Sl St to beginning. =12 Dc, 4 Ch 1

Change Colors beginning now every row.

Row 3:  Join your new color in any Dc preceding a Ch 1 from previous row.  Ch 1,*Fpdc around St, Sc in the top of the same St, Fpdc around next St, Sc in next St, Fpdc around Same St as your Sc, Ch 1*, Repeat * * 3 more times. Join with Sl St to top of Fpdc. = 12 Fpdc, 8 Sc  and 4 Ch1

Row 4:  Join new color in top of any Fpdc preceding a Ch 1 Sp from the previous row.  Ch 1, * 2 Fpdc around the Same St, Sc in next St, 2 Fpdc  around next St, Sc in next st, 2 Fpdc around next st, Ch 1*, Repeat 3 more times. Join with Sl St to beginning.  = 24 Fpdc, 8 Sc and 4 Ch 1 Sp.

Row 5:  Join new color in top of any Fpdc preceding a Ch 1 Sp from the previous row.  Ch 1, *Fpdc around nexts 2 sts,  2 Sc in next St, Fpdc around next 2 Sts, 2 Sc in next St, Fpdc around next 2 Sts, Ch 1 *, Repeat * * 3 more times. Join with Sl St to beginning. = 24 Fpdc, 16 Sc and 4 Ch 1 Sp.

Row 6:   Join new color in top of any Fpdc preceding a Ch 1 Sp from the previous row. Ch 1, *2Fpdc around St, Fpdc around next St, Sc in next 2 Sts, Fpdc around next 2 Sts, Sc in next 2 Sts, Fpdc around next St, 2 Fpdc around next St, Ch 1*, Repeat * * 3 more times. Join with Sl St to beginning. = 32 Fpdc, 16 Sc and 4 ch1.

Row 7:   Join new color in top of any Fpdc preceding a Ch 1 Sp from the previous row. Ch 1, * Fpdc around 1st 2 Sts, 2 Fpdc around next St, Sc in next 2 Sts, Fpdc around next 2 Sts, Sc in next 2 Sts, 2 Fpdc around next St, Fpdc around next 2 Sts, Ch 1*, Repeat 3 more times. =40 Fpdc, 16 Sc and 4 Ch 1.

Row 8:  Join new color in top of any Fpdc preceding a Ch 1 Sp from the previous row. Row 11:  Join in any Ch 1 Sp, Ch 3(counts as Dc now and through out),* Dc in next 20 Sts, (Dc, Ch 1, Dc) in Ch 1 Sp*, Repeat ** 2 more times, Dc in last 20 Sts, Dc in last Ch 1 Sp, Ch 1, Join with Sl St to top of Ch 3. = 88 Dc * 4 Ch 1 Sp

For 10″ Block:

Row 12:  Join in any Ch 1 Sp, Ch 3(counts as Dc now and through out),* Dc in next 22 Sts, (Dc, Ch 1, Dc) in Ch 1 Sp*, Repeat ** 2 more times, Dc in last 22 Sts, Dc in last Ch 1 Sp, Ch 1, Join with Sl St to top of Ch 3. = 96 Dc * 4 Ch 1 Sp

Row 13:  Join in any Ch 1 Sp, Ch 3(counts as Dc now and through out),* Dc in next 24 Sts, (Dc, Ch 1, Dc) in Ch 1 Sp*, Repeat ** 2 more times, Dc in last 24 Sts, Dc in last Ch 1 Sp, Ch 1, Join with Sl St to top of Ch 3. = 104 Dc * 4 Ch 1 Sp

For 12″ Block:

Row 14:  Join in any Ch 1 Sp, Ch 3(counts as Dc now and through out),* Dc in next 26 Sts, (Dc, Ch 1, Dc) in Ch 1 Sp*, Repeat ** 2 more times, Dc in last 26 Sts, Dc in last Ch 1 Sp, Ch 1, Join with Sl St to top of Ch 3. = 112 Dc * 4 Ch 1 Sp

Row 15:  Join in any Ch 1 Sp, Ch 3(counts as Dc now and through out),* Dc in next 28 Sts, (Dc, Ch 1, Dc) in Ch 1 Sp*, Repeat ** 2 more times, Dc in last 28 Sts, Dc in last Ch 1 Sp, Ch 1, Join with Sl St to top of Ch 3. = 120 Dc * 4 Ch 1 Sp
